A visit to Cuchara is total sensory experience. Step into the intriguing world of Jan Tournier and revel in a symphony of pure flavours.
Cuchara, which is Spanish for spoon, is a nod to Lepelstraat, where Jan Tournier opened his restaurant in a stately family property in 2009. You are led off the street to the rear of the building, seat of the restaurant since 2015, and down a long black hallway: a mysterious prelude to your extraordinary setting for the next few hours.
Interior designer Kathleen Simons worked hand in hand with Jan to create an idiosyncratic backdrop that even further enhances the creativity of his dishes. The result is an intimate interior, and one entirely in keeping with Cuchara’s Zen philosophy of allowing nature a leading role.
The tall windows bring natural light into the dark space. Natural materials like wood and leather predominate and interact with earthy tones and countless shades of black to create an atmosphere of warmth.
Jan Tournier has a soft spot, not just for nature but for art. Two outstanding pieces set the restaurant’s artistic tone. At seven metres high, “Root”, a glass tree and the attention-grabber at Cuchara, appears to hover in the space between the impressive wine room and the open kitchen. A touch of mysticism is supplied by the ochre-tinted light. The imposing ceiling sculpture by glass artist Jeroen Maes is a poetic reference to the chef’s roots and serves as a tribute to the craftsmanship of Lommel’s glass blowers.
On the black wall opposite the expansive window, artist Esther Barend created “Sensation of Flavours”, a dark and impressive four-panel work made from natural materials. The vertical panels accentuate the room’s height and provide contrast with the organic shapes of the restaurant’s round and oval tables.
For those wishing to experience Cuchara in a more personal way, we welcome guests in our stylish private dining room. An intimate setting where gastronomy, atmosphere and discretion come together for a truly memorable experience.
The room is perfectly suited for private events, business dinners or a warm gathering with family and friends. From 4 to 11 guests, you can enjoy Jan Tournier’s cuisine in an exclusive setting, with the same care and attention you experience in the restaurant.
For larger events, the entire restaurant can be booked exclusively.
